What You Need to Know Before Work Begins.

GPR results depend on the concrete, target type, depth, reinforcement density, surface access and other site conditions. These answers provide general guidance; project-specific requirements can be discussed before scanning begins.

General

Ground Penetrating Radar, or GPR, is a non-destructive scanning technology that uses electromagnetic signals to gather information about detectable features below a surface. In concrete, it can help identify reinforcement, post-tension components, conduits and other subsurface responses where conditions allow.

GPR uses non-ionizing electromagnetic energy rather than X-rays or other ionizing radiation. It is widely used as a non-destructive investigation method in construction and concrete scanning applications.

Scanning Capabilities

Depending on conditions, GPR can help identify detectable reinforcement, post-tension tendons or ducts, conduits, sleeves, material interfaces and anomalous subsurface responses. What can be distinguished depends on target size, material, depth and the surrounding concrete.

No. GPR has limitations and does not guarantee detection of every embedded feature. Dense reinforcement, metal decking, target depth, concrete composition, moisture, small targets and other conditions can affect the quality and interpretation of scan data.

There is no single reliable depth that applies to every concrete structure. Effective investigation depth depends on the equipment, concrete composition, moisture, reinforcement density, target size and other site conditions. The useful depth for a particular project is therefore assessed in context.

Suitable concrete slabs, floors, walls and other accessible structural surfaces can be scanned where there is sufficient access for the equipment. The feasibility of scanning columns, beams, masonry or other surfaces depends on the project conditions.

Project Process

Scan time depends on the number and size of the areas, accessibility, concrete conditions, required level of investigation and project complexity. A small number of penetration locations may require considerably less time than full-area reinforcement or utility mapping.

The scan surface should be accessible and, where practical, clear of equipment, stored materials, furniture or other obstructions. Available structural drawings, as-builts, proposed penetration locations and photographs can also help establish the scanning scope.

Deliverables depend on the agreed project scope. They may include field markings, scan information, selected images or project documentation. Required deliverables should be confirmed before the work begins.
